Dungeons started opening up everywhere, and hunting the magical crystals inside them turned "Explorer" into an actual job people could hold. The protagonist's father died doing exactly that, leaving him alone with his mother — and somewhere along the way, "alone with his mother" stops meaning what it used to.

He starts pursuing her, deliberately and without much subtlety, while the world outside keeps producing dungeons and monsters that need clearing.

Combat runs on turn-based RPG mechanics, sending the protagonist into dungeons to fight and gather crystals between the scenes at home where the actual point of the game plays out. The two threads run side by side rather than blending into one system.
