Eternal Ward: Dark Reign

A portal dumps you into a realm under siege, with one job: keep the angel who can end the darkness alive while the Demon King's armies come at her in waves. You hold the line, alone at first, then maybe not.

The fighting plays out as side-scrolling combat, holding ground wave after wave against demons and monster girls who don't just want to kill you. Losing a bout tends to end in something other than a game-over screen, and the game leans into that as much as the swordplay. Between fights there's the odd puzzle to break up the grinding, and the promise of allies if you can find them, though the demons currently do most of the talking.
