About
A man who has spent his whole adult life rebuilding himself after collapse, only to have the one life he thought was finally stable start slipping anyway, is not a promising sign for the reader either.
He's made mistakes before, and he's been on the receiving end of other people's, and each time he's picked through the wreckage and put together something more careful than the last version. He thought this one would hold. The story is built around finding out whether it actually does, and what's left of him if it doesn't.
Play moves through his relationships and the choices that quietly redirect them, with the point-and-click rhythm of a visual novel underneath: talk, decide, see where it leads, and eventually land on one of several different outcomes depending on what you protected and what you let go.
Changelog
- Initial Release
- 1300+ Static Renders
- 3000+ Animated Frames
- 18,000+ Lines of Script/Dialog
- 41 Song Soundtrack
- Initial Release - Hot Fix
- Approximately 60 lines of additional code
- This interim phone-system UI hotfix addresses comments about the text flow/mechanics/cadence and allows players to click through scripted text messages and roll forward through already-viewed phone segments. This is not the final UI revision, but it removes the forced full-timer playback while a more complete cleanup is built.
- The demo for What Remains is officially available.
- This release contains roughly 90 minutes or more of gameplay, depending on how you play and which choices you make. The demo covers the opening portion of the first Chapter and introduces the main character, the tropical Azure Island setting, the trait system, the phone interface, and the first major branching path.
- Your choices can affect who the MC meets, how certain scenes unfold, which traits increase, and which version of later events you experience. The demo currently includes the first major branched routes through the opening of the story, with both paths leading into the final scene sequence of the demo and their own unique ending points.
- The demo includes:
- The first major branching scene and various dialogue paths
- Competence, Resolve, Connection, and Perception trait system
- A functional in-game phone with contacts, messages, photos, and trait progression
- First character image unlocks
- Original renders, animations, music placement, sound design, and custom UI
- Windows, Linux, and macOS builds
- This is still the opening of a much larger story. The demo introduces several main and minor character introductions, relationships, systems, and central mystery that will continue throughout the first Chapter and the larger What Remains universe.
- Your demo progress is intended to remain compatible with the full release of the first Chapter.
- Content Warning: This game is intended for adults only and contains strong language, mature themes, and brief nudity.
- Thank you to everyone who has followed the project waiting for this release. Reaching this point took work and investment, and I am proud to finally put the first playable version of What Remains into your hands.
