The Revelations of Chaos

Gary is a private detective who is bad at his job, which is a problem, since the case he's stumbled into keeps getting worse the harder he looks at it. A simple missing-persons gig turns into corrupt officials, a cult called the Arborists of Truth, and eventually ritual sacrifices and forests that appear to be alive, which is more than a magnifying glass is built to handle.

The plot moves through investigation rather than deduction: Gary follows leads, talks to the wrong people, and gets pulled deeper into a conspiracy that may go further than anyone in it realizes, himself included.

You play this as a point-and-click adventure, poking around scenes and dialogue to push the case forward, with turn-based fights breaking up the digging when things stop being polite. The women he runs into along the way are not particularly interested in helping him solve anything, and Gary is not particularly interested in refusing them.
